Leader Specific Training

Once volunteers have completed New Leader Essentials giving them an overview of the BSA program, they begin training for a specific Scouting position. This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. Whenever there is a change in a leader's leadership position, the leader needs to take the Leader Specific training for the new position. Because each course is designed for a specific leadership position, the training time varies.

Leader Specific training has been developed for the following positions and their assistants:

 

 

 

     Cub Scout Leader Specific Training


This training provides the specialized knowledge a new Cub Scout Leader needs to assume a leadership role. Because each course is designed for a specific leadership position, the training time varies. Cub Scout Leader Specific training has been developed for the following positions and their assistants:

  • Tiger Cub den Leaders
  • Cub Scout den leaders
  • Webelos den leaders
  • Cubmasters and assistants
  • Pack committee members

Note: Leaders only need to take the training for their specific position.

Prerequisites – Participants should have completed New Leader Essentials.


 
 

     

 

         Boy Scout Leader Specific Training


For Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters, this training is divided into four parts. The first three parts concentrate on troop operation and can be completed in one full day or three evenings.
The fourth part, Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, focuses on outdoor skills. This overnight course is offered at Chesterfield Scout Reservation each spring.

For troop committee members, Leader Specific training includes the Troop Committee Challenge. By following the Troop Committee Training Syllabus, participants can complete the challenge in three hours.

Prerequisites – Participants should have completed New Leader Essentials.


 
 

 

 

        Varsity Coach Leader Specific Training


This course is designed for the new Varsity Coach and assistants. It provides an introduction to the Boy Scouts of America and to the responsibilities, opportunities, and resources that will ensure a successful Varsity team leadership experience.

The training offers four sessions:

  • Setting Out: The Role of the Varsity Coach
  • Mountaintop Challenges: The Outdoor/Sports Program and the Advancement Program
  • Pathways to Success: Program Planning and Team Administration
  • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills
  •  

Prerequisites – Participants should have completed New Leader Essentials.


 

 

 

 

        Venturing Leader Specific Training


This training introduces the new adult crew leader to Venturing by providing basic information needed to successfully operate a crew. This information includes the purpose and mission of Venturing; characteristics of Venture-aged youth; organization and leadership of the crew; and program planning and officer training.

Prerequisites – Participants should have completed New Leader Essentials.


 
 

 

 

     Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills

Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start a Campingprogram right. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity Scout coaches and is the fourth part of Boy Scout Leader specific training. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook. The course is also ideal for Venturing leaders because it focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences.

Prerequisites – Participants should have completed New Leader Essentials and Leader Specific Training.

After completing Leader Specific training, you will want to take a side path into "Supplemental Training".
