Due to school scheduling conflicts, we had to change the location of the Pow-Wow from JFK Middle School to Jackson Street Elementary.  Jackson Street is is near JFK, just a mile or so down Bridge Street.   (click for a map)

What is POW-WOW?  Pow-Wow is a one-day supplemental Cub Scout Leader training extravaganza!  It goes beyond New Leader Essentials Training for Cub Scouting adults, to renew knowledge, learn current policies and share experiences in Scouting. All Cub Scouting adults are invited and encouraged to attend.  There will be something for everyone at this, the biggest Cub Scout training event of the year!

When and Where?  Pow-Wow will be held Saturday, November 3, 2007, 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM at Jackson Street Elementary School, 120 Jackson Street, Northampton, MA.  (click for a map).

What is the Schedule?  The day’s schedule of fun includes:

  • 8:00 Registration and sign in
  • 8:45 Opening Ceremony
  • 9:00 Session One
  • 10:00 Session Two
  • 11:00 Session Three
  • 12:00 Lunch (BYO) Network Time
  • 12:50 Session Four
  • 1:45 Session Five
  • 2:30 Closing

Sign-In begins at 8:00 AM and we anticipate that everybody should be on his or her way home by 3:00 PM. The registration fee includes materials, refreshments and a Patch. To aid us in the planning of this event, the early bird registration deadline is October 22. Patches and materials will be limited, therefore, preference will be given to those pre-registered.

SESSION ONE:

Crafty Hoods: Are you craft challenged?? Need help getting ready for the theme at summer camp next year? Funds are tight? We have the sources and information for you.

Webelos 101: The 18 month Webelos program can be overwhelming to a leader. We will help you get started and give you many tips on how to keep on track, keep it fun, and not be overwhelmed.

Cubs with Special Challenges: Have a den with a variety of cub personalities and learning levels? Worried about the high energy level of your cubs? How can I adjust the program to accommodate physically challenged scouts, mentally challenged scouts? How do I treat the cubs in my den equally? Can I provide a top-notch program for the den with becoming overwhelmed? This session is for you.

Service Projects and Reporting: Need ideas for service projects? Questions about Good Turn for America? How does the Unit report service hours? This session is for you. All your questions will be answered.

SESSION TWO:

Whittlin’ Chip: Teaching the ins and outs of knives to your cubs. Learn simple projects for them to do to practice their skills. Go home with a brand new tie slide. (Please bring a jackknife)

Singing Up a Storm: You say you can’t sing. No matter! Singing is for everyone. We will help build your confidence and teach you some really nifty songs. Don’t know where to find the words? We will reveal some of our secret sources. Feel free to bring a tape recorder to this session.

Wolves/Bears – The Ins and Outs: Little tricks to make scouting fun for the leaders. Bring your questions, problems and input to the session. Network with other den leaders.

Advancement Ceremonies: Liven up Pack meeting with special ways to recognize the boys as they receive their advancement patches and awards.

SPECIAL SURPRISE SESSION FOR EVERYONE – You are all signed up for this one.

SESSION FOUR:

Jazzing Up Your Den Meeting: Have the Den Meeting Blahs?? Need a spark to liven up your meeting? We have a few ideas for you.

A Knotty Situation: Don’t be afraid when someone hands you that piece of rope! Tying knots is easier than you think – and fun too!

Things That Fly: Inside and out flying things have intrigued boys for eons. Learn simple techniques to teach the boys and practice them. Projects for the great windy month of March will be provided (and most can be done on a shoestring budget).

Games, Games, Games: Is there a Scout on earth that doesn’t like to play? We’ll teach you all kinds of games – active, quiet, team, etc.- to spark up your meetings.

SESSION FIVE:

Who are Den Chiefs??: Find out all about Den Chiefs. Meet our newest trainees. Talk with them and discover what a den chief can do for you and what you can do for them.

Special Awards for Cubs / Leaders: Learn what other awards Cubs can earn and how leaders can earn their knots. Also, part of the session will be about in-house awards, pinewood derby awards, and volunteer recognitions.

Tiger Cub’s Electives: What is beyond earning the Tiger Patch?? Tiger Electives. What are they, how to do them, why do them and how to round out the tiger year.
